Of course custom picture framing does make the picture a little classier. It should look a little neater and flatter, for instance, as the artwork it's often either dry or wet-mounted.
But it's that worth more than double the money, especially for inexpensive holiday prints? Again, it's your choice and, if unsure, just contact us! Extra tip: When getting custom picture framing done ask your framer for a cash payment discount. Chances are they can because the profit margin on custom picture framing is higher. However you may not be able to get one when buying ready-made frames.
This is because these are probably already heavily discounted and also because as they are sold by a number of stores, the pricing tends to be quite competitive with little margin for further price reductions. Yes, don’t buy custom picture frames! They cost an arm and a leg! The picture framer has to make them by hand and of course it’s going to be expensive! The cost difference between custom frames and ready made frames is a bit buying a like microwave TV dinner or going for dinner at a French restaurant. Of course the latter will cost you a lot more, right? So is with photo frames or picture frames, the overseas, mass-produced ones will cost you lot less than the ones hand-made here, locally. Makes sense.
Custom picture framing has to be relatively expensive in order to produce custom picture frames. It just can’t be any other way if you carefully analyze and scrutinize all commercial and economic factors. Of course, if you’re an industry outsider looking in, you simply won’t see or know all pertinent aspects. The biggest problem is that even a half-respecting picture framer will carry and stock hundreds of different of these, a huge cost. Then there’s plant, equipment and fixed costs like rent and utilities. Again, even the small, corner picture framer ( if he or she exists anymore ) has to outlay maybe upwards to $2000 to $3000 x month just to keep the doors open, and that’s before he or she makes any money !! You do the maths, a picture framer must produce at least 20 or 30 frames a month at $100 each minimum juts to pay the bills!! And assuming that he or she is rightfully entitled to make a profit from his or her investment or labour, the cost x frame then escalates to about $200 x picture frame. Getting the picture now?
People forget that the world and its people have changed. Millennials don’t need or want to buy fine art prints, works on paper or expensive limited edition prints. Much less do they want to spend hundreds of dollars to frame such art in museum quality or conservation custom picture frames. To most of them, the art they want for their walls should be large, cheap and cheery. It doesn’t matter to them where the art, canvas or picture frame came from because it is not and will never be an investment. In most case it will be throw-away, disposable art after it’s become dated, boring or just passe’. The days of acquiring a rare Norman Lindsay or valuable Clifton Pugh litograph as an asset or investment, , having it professionally custom framed and keeping it in the family to be passed on to one’s children or willed to one’s heirs, have gone, and I fear, forever.
