Norman Lindsay "The Apex of Life" Facsimile Etching by Norman Lindsay (1879-1969), artist, cartoonist, and writer. Norman came from a family that produced five artists, he left home at sixteen to live with his brother in Melbourne. In 1901 he moved to his permanent home in the Blue Mountains, working for the Bulletin in an association that lasted almost to his death. His first novel was published in 1913, and by the 1920s he was both proficient and prolific in pen and ink drawing, etching, woodcuts, watercolours and sculpture. Lindsay rejected Christianity, and his art depicts Bohemianism and Arcadian pantheism madly admixed in a fantasy world. As early as 1904 his work was labelled blasphemous and deemed obscene. Norman Lindsay "The Apex of Life" Facsimile Etching is a frank rendition of female nudity and many of his other etchings depict cavorting bacchanalia which both scandalized and fascinated the conservative milieu and Australian bourgeoisie of his time. In 1930 his novel ‘Redheap’ was banned and the following year the police proceeded against an issue of Art and Australia that showcased his drawings. His enduring art, work and philosophical legacy remain popular with the art world, collectors and the general public alike. The original etching was etched in 1923 in an edition of 55. It was one of three etchings which was banned from being exhibited at Artists' Week in Adelaide in 1924. The committee rejected the etchings on the grounds that they would 'debase rather than uplift art': ... we could not allow the showing of pictures of the kind rejected because of the immoral and sensual atmosphere which would be provided by them. The gestures of the figures of men and women in the nude would be offensive to many, and in regard to one picture it might be said that it represented a wild licentious riot of the worst Pagan times. The colour was chosen to be as close to the original colour by Rose Lindsay. To ensure the Limited Edition status of this Facsimile Etching, all original printing materials and plates used for the printing are cancelled and destroyed. This etching is published in strict accordance with Copyright conditions. Authenticity is guaranteed by an embossed seal in the lower right hand corner of the image and the work is accompanied by its Certificate of Authenticity. Each work is individually hand-numbered up to a maximum of 550 and once an edition has sold out, it is never again released.
