It was around the time of the GFC (Global Financial Crisis) , or a few years after this millennium began, that picture picture-framing-customer-at-a-picture-frame-storeframers throughout the world began noticing that the spending patterns and behaviour of their customer had changed. For those frames who entered the framing industry in the golden years of breaching whales and leaping dolphins posters this was a cultural and financial shock.  Kodak, Borders, One.Tel, and other corporate, lost customers by their tens of thousands and soon fell by the wayside. And yet, at much the same time, those same customers began queuing for hours ...

What’s the best way of lifting, carrying and handling picture frames?

Posted on By:
Wiki-Knowledge-article-icon

Certainly, not by lifting one by the top of the frame as the man is doing in the photo. Unless the string, cord, wire or chain at the wrong-way-to-carry-a-picture-frameback is loose, frayed or damaged and unless the retaining hangers or fixings are missing or loose, picture frames and photo frames ought always be carried by whatever hanging devices they were fitted with. That's why they're there for. The danger with carrying picture frames by their frames,  especially larger frames, is that doing this might break the framing tape, seal, "spring" open the backing ...

Attaching artwork (a photo, print, document or paper) to the back of a mat is called "hinging" by picture framers.  This is attaching-hinges-to-a-window-matvery different to "taping". Some of my picture frames look dirty, how should I clean a picture frame?

Posted on By:
Wiki-Knowledge-article-icon

Most photo frames, poster frames, certificate frames and picture frames consist of a wooden frame and a pane of glass. The picture frame moulding (frame) is often finely finished with gold or silver foils or leaves being a few micron ( very thin) thick. Many household cleaners contain ammonia, solvents and abrasives and shouldn't be used to clean frames lest the finish .. or colour of the frame come off accidentally. Perhaps the best way to keep a picture frame clean is to gently dust it regularly to prevent the dust and dirt ...

Wiki-Knowledge-article-icon

In fact, if you squeeze the glass and the back of the frame together, or run a fingertip hard across the back of the frame, you should see the mark, 'spot' or 'stain' increase or travel in the same spot or direction as your squeezing or your fingertip moves. And the more the photo touches the glass, the bigger the mark or 'stain' will appear too be. Release the pressure or lift you fingertip and the mark will lessen or disappear altogether. When we ask them what size their picture are many say that the don't know for sure. They say that they don't have the picture because they're just about to order it online or that they've just done so. It seem that customers either take it for granted or assume that the picture size they're getting online will be exactly as described or ordered....

We had already written a few posts on the subject of how light can damage your precious framed art, but recently we came acrfaded-photograph-damaged-by-sunlightoss an old and rather interesting article. After reading it, we deemed it as being far more detailed and better researched than we had already written, even though our posts are based on our experiences and empirical observations over the years. This article, reproduced below, had all the headers cut and was pasted in an old school project book. Although we'd like to attribute it to its original writer, we can't as all the authoring information was removed. Nevertheless if ...
